Welcome from the Head of Academy

Welcome to Walsall! We hope you find your placement with us productive, rewarding and enjoyable. Our culture is one of informality and friendliness and we are keen that you make the most of your time with us and feel part of our team. We are proud of our high standards and of the wide range of teaching opportunities we offer students on placement here. We are student-focused and you will be supported in your studies by our dedicated team here in the Academy.

These are exciting times here in Walsall. We have doubled our quota of Clinical Teaching Fellows, thus enabling us to provide more bed-side teaching for our students. We have now started to establish Academy Tutor/Advanced Clinical Practitioner roles in key clinical areas of the hospital e.g. A & E resuscitation bay. These expert practitioners are supernumerary and provide excellent 1:1 teaching/supervision opportunities for our students in clinical areas. This innovative approach has been well received by our students and there are plans now to expand this initiative.

The teaching and support we provide you goes beyond your placement with us. We have now established MBChB revision weekends covering the key components of the 4th & 5th year curriculums. These weekends are scheduled the week before your exams and priority is given to students who have been on placement with us.

Working closely with Birmingham Medical School, we strive to help train the very best doctors who are safe, competent, good communicators and well placed to meet the demands of a changing National Health Service.

We look forward to welcoming you to Walsall and we hope that you have a productive and enjoyable placement with us.
